When a parent hands their student’s SAT, ACT, or ISEE prep over to a tutor, they’re not just paying for hours — they’re trusting someone to shape their child’s confidence and their score. That trust is only as good as the person on the other side of the table.
So when we tell parents that every Victory Prep instructor is verified, we mean something specific by it. Here’s exactly what “verified” means at Victory Prep — and the process every one of our tutors has to complete before they ever meet your child.
The Filter: 1 in 20
Every month, we receive hundreds of tutoring applications. Most don’t make it past the first review. On average, only about 1 in 20 applicants becomes a Victory Prep instructor.
That’s not gatekeeping for its own sake. It’s the only way we can honestly promise parents that the person sitting across from their child is genuinely one of the best available — not just someone who was willing to fill out a form and answer a phone call.

What We Actually Look For
Four things, in order of priority:
1. Top-percentile test scores. If a tutor is going to teach the SAT, we want to see they scored in the top percentile on it themselves. Same for the ACT, PSAT, ISEE, and SSAT. This isn’t about credentialism — it’s about credibility. A student learning SAT math from someone who scored 1400 is a different experience than learning it from someone who scored 1550. Both are strong scores, but only one has stood at the top of the mountain and can guide a student there.
2. Real test prep experience. We prioritize applicants who have already tutored — ideally in test prep specifically. A brilliant college student who has never taught before might one day be a great tutor, but they’re going to learn on someone else’s students. Not yours.
3. College graduates (or advanced students on that trajectory). Every instructor is either a college graduate or a current top-tier college student. Most of our tutors come from schools like Rice, UT Austin, Washington University, and other selective universities. Degrees aren’t everything — but the discipline it takes to earn one from a rigorous program tells us something meaningful about the person.
4. Referrals and reputation. A meaningful portion of our roster comes through referrals from tutors already on the team. When one of our existing instructors personally vouches for someone, that candidate gets a serious look. That kind of trust chain matters — it’s a signal we can’t get from a resume.
You cannot teach a student to reach the 99th percentile if you’ve never been there yourself. There’s a specific kind of pattern recognition, pacing intuition, and strategic thinking that only develops in students who have scored at the very top of these tests. That’s what our students are paying for — and it’s why we won’t compromise on this credential, ever.
Background Checks
Every candidate who makes it past the credentials review goes through a full background check — criminal history, identity verification, sex offender registry — before they’re allowed anywhere near a student. No exceptions, ever.
If something concerning comes up, they don’t move forward. Full stop. This is one of the questions we get most often from parents, and the answer is always the same: every instructor on our roster has been checked, and we would never place a student with someone whose background hadn’t been thoroughly verified.
The Interview
If a candidate clears the paper review and the background check, we invite them for an interview. This isn’t a formality.
We’re evaluating:
- How they explain concepts — can they take something complex and make it clear?
- How they handle questions they don’t immediately know the answer to
- How they think about pacing a session — do they understand why structure matters?
- Whether they actually connect with students — because being smart isn’t the same as being teachable
Plenty of impressive-on-paper candidates don’t make it through this stage. Someone can have a 1580 SAT and a degree from a great school and still not be able to teach effectively. That’s exactly why this step exists.
The Training
Getting hired isn’t the finish line — it’s the start. Every new instructor goes through one-on-one training with one of our experienced master instructors before they teach their first student.
They learn:
- Our teaching methodology — how we structure sessions, how we diagnose weaknesses, and how we build toward mastery
- Our diagnostic and progress-tracking tools — the same systems parents see in their student’s dashboard
- How to run a session from start to finish — from opening review to homework assignment
- How to communicate with parents through session notes and progress updates
They shadow real sessions with experienced tutors and get direct feedback before they ever teach solo. By the time they meet their first Victory Prep student, they aren’t figuring anything out on the fly.
Most tutoring platforms — especially the marketplace-style ones — hand over the classroom the moment a tutor is approved. Victory Prep doesn’t. Every one of our instructors has been trained by someone who has already helped hundreds of students succeed, in our system, using our tools. That’s a very different starting point.
What “Verified” Means
By the time a Victory Prep instructor sits down with your child for the first time, they’ve been:
- Filtered through hundreds of other applicants
- Verified on test scores in the tests they’ll teach
- Confirmed as an experienced tutor with real teaching background
- Educated at a top college or on that path
- Background-checked for criminal history and identity
- Interviewed for teaching ability, not just credentials
- Personally trained by one of our master instructors
That’s what “Verified Victory Prep Instructor” means. It’s not a badge we hand out casually — it’s the outcome of a rigorous multi-step process that most applicants don’t survive.
