Session 1

General SAT Overview, Textual Evidence, Punctuation, Algebra

The first lecture will encompass an overview of the exam, leading into a breakdown of each section: Reading, Writing, Non-Calculator Math, and Calculator Math. General discussion of time management, test-taking strategies, scoring, and methods for each section are also included. This leads into lessons starting to dive into each of the sections, focusing on evidence-based reading questions, correct punctuation and sentence structure, and the basics of algebra.

Exam 1

Proctored Exam 1 – Diagnostic Exam

The first proctored exam will be a diagnostic exam designed to gauge where each student is and will be utilized to guide them from there on certain subject areas they may be weak in and reinforce ones they are strong in. Question and topic analytics from each of the sections will be provided with this and every following exam.

Session 2

Review, Words in Context, Word & Phrase Transitions, Systems of Equations

The second reading lesson emphasizes putting each answer in a reading passage in context with the sentence, paragraph, or passage in question. The writing lesson is all about transition words, sentence flow, and the relationship between sentences. The math lesson teaches students about systems of equations, their graphs, and how to solve them.

Any homework assigned from the previous lecture will be reviewed along with the diagnostic exam. This involves the instructor going over questions that students may have, pointing out common mistakes, and solving them.

Session 3

Review, Main Purpose/Summary, Word Choice & Vocabulary, Linear Functions

The third reading lesson is all about the main purpose/central claim/summary of the passage/paragraph in question and how to distinguish between vague ideas, overly detailed claims, and true summaries. The writing lesson is about identifying correct word choice and utilizing vocabulary in tone and style with a passage. The math lesson teaches linear equations, their different forms, graphing them, solving them, and identifying their parts.

Any homework assigned from the previous lecture will be reviewed along with the diagnostic exam. This involves the instructor going over questions that students may have, pointing out common mistakes, and solving them.

Exam 2

The second proctored exam will be a practice exam meant as a benchmark for how the student has progressed as well as solid practice for the real deal. Taking a practice exam will give students insight into how the actual SAT will feel like and gives students hands on experience. Session 4

Review, Graphs and Figures, Subject-Verb Agreement, Quadratic Functions

The fourth reading lesson goes over the interpretation of graphs and figures that coincide with certain passages. The writing lesson discusses in detail what a subject-verb agreement is, how to identify each part of it in a sentence, and logically determine its conjugation. The interpretation and solving of quadratic functions are introduced in the math lesson, including factoring, graphing, and the quadratic formula.

Review, Author Reasoning/Anticipate Responses, Sentence Placement, Geometry

The fifth reading lesson delves into what the author’s intention is in terms of the questions and the passage, which is a key strategy to anticipating how a character or person might react to a question’s stimulus. The writing lesson is about sentence structure, passage flow, and identifying chronological and logical order of ideas. Math in this lecture is all about geometry and everything involved with that including the Pythagorean Theorem, trigonometric functions, circle functions and graphing, and perimeter, area, and volume formulas.

Exam 3

Proctored Exam 3

The third proctored exam will be another practice exam, following the trend of building up test-taking endurance. Practice exams are meant to be taken as endurance challenges and as a way to give students the confidence they need to tackle the real SAT head on when the time comes. Question and topic analytics from each of the sections will be provided with this and every following exam.

Session 6

Review, Tone/Emotion/Implied Meaning, Specific Requests, Polynomials

The sixth reading lesson is much more meaning intensive, going over the tone, emotion, implications, and general understanding of any one given passage or sentence. The writing lesson will simply be the instructor answering specific requests that any student may have in detail, making sure everyone is up to speed. The math lesson is about polynomials, more factoring, polynomial expansion, completing the square, and long and synthetic division.

Any homework assigned from the previous lecture will be reviewed along with the previous exam. This involves the instructor going over questions that students may have, pointing out common mistakes, and solving them.

Session 7

Review, Reading Review, Misc. English, Story Problems

The seventh reading lesson will be a review of critical evidence-based reading and using answers in context of the passage. The writing lesson will be longer, encompassing a multitude of topics that don’t fit under a simple umbrella covered in previous sessions: combining sentences, redundancy, addition/deletion, interpreting figures, etc. The math lesson is about something a lot of students have trouble with: story problems. Instructors will teach how to turn a wordy question with a lot of information (some of it unnecessary) into digestible terms. Any homework assigned from the previous lecture will be reviewed along with the previous exam. This involves the instructor going over questions that students may have, pointing out common mistakes, and solving them.

Exam 4

Proctored Exam 4

The fourth, and final, proctored exam will be another practice exam, being the final gauge as to how the student will do before the big day. At this point, they will have gone through and studied multiple practice exams along with the lessons they’ve learned in the class, gaining the wherewithal to comfortably and confidently confront the SAT. Question and topic analytics from each of the sections will be provided with this exam.

Session 8

Review, Reading & English Review, Probability/Central Tendency/Unit Conversion

The eighth reading lesson is another review, this time about divining the main purpose of a passage or paragraph and interpreting graphs, figures, and tables attached to passages. The writing lesson is a review of topics covered already: punctuation, transitions, and word choice. The math lesson continues with new material with central tendency (mean, median, mode, range, standard deviation), probability and determining the numerator and denominator from a word problem, and converting units with dimensional analysis and stepwise conversion.

Session 9

Review, Reading & English Review, Misc. Math Topics

The ninth, and last, reading lesson will be reviewing topics like author’s reasoning/intent and the tone and emotion of a passage. The continued writing review involves subject-verb agreements, sentence placement, idea flow, and more miscellaneous topics. The math lesson is going over some topics that didn’t fit with some of the categories gone over in previous sessions: fractions, exponents, logarithms, and imaginary/complex numbers. Any homework assigned from the previous lecture will be reviewed along with the previous exam. This involves the instructor going over questions that students may have, pointing out common mistakes, and solving them.

Are course materials provided with the class?

Yes, all course materials are included in course fee. There are no additional materials to purchase and you will be provided with everything you need to effectively prepare for the SAT or ACT Exam. You will receive everything on the first day of exam or lecture. Our materials include:

What if I can’t make it to one of the proctored tests?

Students are allowed to take the test at home and enter their answers online if they are unable to make it to one of our Saturday proctored tests. Students receive printed answer sheets with home testing instructions.

What do I need to bring to my first class?

Since Victory Step is an awesome tutoring company, all you would need to bring is a pencil, calculator, and lots of dedication! We will get you results; we just need you to be ready!

Are the practice tests we take full-length official tests?

Yes, all practice tests are official full-length SAT/PSAT exams. They are exactly like the SAT/PSAT you will be taking on the final day. They are designed to simulate the actual test taking experience.

What if I can’t make it to one of the classroom lectures?

Victory Step offers consecutive classroom programs on a different day or location. A student is allowed to miss one lecture, and can be made up with one-on-one tutoring. Please call us if you would like to make up a missed classroom lecture.

Do you cover the SAT/ACT essay?

Students will be working on essays at home and in class, with their instructor and peers.

Would the SAT/PSAT course help me prepare for the PSAT?

Our SAT/PSAT course covers all of the question types and provides students test take strategies and psychology. The SAT/PSAT has the exact same type of questions as the PSAT, but is more evil and longer in length. Both tests are from the same test maker, The College Board. Our SAT/PSAT course is a solid preparation for those seeking to apply for a National Merit Scholarship.

How soon should I register for one of the classes?

Victory Step is one of the only companies in Dallas, Fort Worth, and Houston with a class size of 10 students (yes, we care about our students!). As soon as we get the 10th student, our classrooms go “out of stock��?. And, to be honest, our awesome classes get filled up quickly (no surprise). For that reason, we recommend that you sign up as soon as you can!

What is the typical classroom size?

Average class size is 8- 10 students. Isn’t that awesome?! We want our students to get the attention they deserve.

Can I sign up for a course if it has already started?

Students can join our classroom or hybrid course if they have missed one lecture. We make the missed classroom session with one-on-one tutoring.

What is the difference between the SAT and ACT exam?

The SAT/PSAT is analytical whereas the ACT is more curriculum based. The SAT/PSAT tests you on vocabulary, and the ACT tests you on science-based reading passages. The SAT/PSAT has tricky less-advanced Math questions, but the ACT has straight-forward more advanced Math questions.

Is my instructor available outside of class?

Our instructors are mentors who care about you as a student. They are passionate about teaching. On the very first day, your instructor will provide you with his/her email and phone number. They get excited if you reach out to them to ask questions. So, to answer the question, they will be available before or after class. You can always call or email them to ask SAT, ACT, college related questions, etc.

Do I need to be serious for your SAT/ACT class?

Some students come to class on their own free-will, while others do because their parents have asked them to attend. The SAT/PSAT is the single most important test you will take in high school. Your score on this test can determine many life outcomes, and you might not be fully aware of all of the ramifications of your test score. Our SAT/PSAT class is for serious students who want to improve. Our classes are fun yet challenging.
