Online Tutoring: An Effective Connection

Why Tutor Online?

During my time as a tutor I’ve heard many people ask if online tutoring is just as effective as in-person tutoring. I hadn’t really done much of it until the current COVID-19 outbreak as it is a much more secure option during this crisis. Socially distancing is a very important part of our lives at the moment and online tutoring is a great way to achieve it. That is one huge boon to online tutoring along with the convenience of doing it from home, a library, or abroad. Another reason you might want to learn online is simply a lack of tutors in your area. Whether you live out in the country, in a remote town, or are simply too far away from a city center, online tutoring works!

How Does it Work?

Typically, online tutoring utilizes a video conferencing platform like Zoom or Skype. It can be one or two-way video, but will always be two-way audio, of course! By using the same book, students can follow along as  the lesson goes on. At any point, the tutor can show their work on camera or vice-versa. Some advanced online platforms allow drawing on a pad or show slides that both the student and tutor can use. There is also a texting component to all of these platforms, so topics spelling and grammar can be conveyed quite easily!

How Does it Compare?

Recently, I started doing some online tutoring with some of my students and I have to say that we are making just as much progress as before! Admittedly, I already have built a rapport with these students, but I’m sure that exclusively learning online works! The past few sessions have been very productive, especially since we are using the same book and looking at the same questions. As an added bonus, the tutor doesn’t have to drive anywhere and the parents don’t have to clean the place up! All jokes aside, I am fully confident in the effectiveness and viability of online tutoring.
