Getting into the college of your dreams is only the first step. Many students find that they do not have the resources to attend their first choice university once they have been accepted. But scholarship searches are complicated and boring! Many are only appealing to students with high GPAs and a long list of extracurricular activities and volunteer hours. Is your GPA sagging a little behind what you wanted, and is it too late for you to through yourself into volunteerism? Never fear, because there are still fun, interesting scholarships you can apply to that rely on skills outside of the traditional set!

  1. Real Princess Scholarship – This $4,000 award is designed to raise awareness of female stereotypes in the media. Between 2007 and 2012, less than a third of speaking roles in the top 500 movies were portrayed by women. Combating these stereotypes of women in movies is Disney, who seeks to redefine the role of their princesses. To enter this scholarship, go to https://www.dosomething.org/campaigns/realprincess and submit a drawing of a princess that redefines the traditional role of females in movies. You can enter the scholarship raffle as many times as you want, but don’t delay – the deadline for this scholarship is March 31, 2015.
  2. Shower Songs Campaign – This $4,000 scholarship seeks to raise awareness on the amount of water wasted by Americans showering each year – over a trillion gallons each year! If we all reduced our showers to just 5 minutes each day, it’s estimated that the average American would save about 1,500 gallons of water each year. To enter this scholarship drawing, submit a two-song playlist to help track the amount of time spent in the shower to dosomething.org/campaigns/shower-songs. You can enter this scholarship as many times as you want, but once again, hurry! The deadline is March 31, 2015.
  3. Doodle 4 Google – The grand prize for this scholarship is $30,000, as well as free technology, a trip to Google headquarters, and $50,000 for your high school. This opportunity is open to students of all grade levels, from K-12, and scholarships and prizes are awarded to different tiers of students based off of Google judges and online popularity votes. This opportunity has ended for this year, but it will be available again in September at http://www.google.com/doodle4google/index.html .
  4. Superpower Scholarship 2015 – Have you always wanted to be a superhero or supervillain? Do you spend hours each day daydreaming about what it would be like to save the world – or to be really, really bad? Channel those dreams into up to $2,500 by writing a short essay about which superhero or supervillain you’d like to be and submitting at https://www.scholarshipexperts.com/scholarships/our-scholarships. The deadline for this scholarship is fast approaching, so don’t delay!

An inability to pay for college should never be a reason not to go. There are millions of dollars of scholarship opportunities waiting for you! You are only constrained by the amount of effort you are willing to put into following your dreams!
