Not yet sure what to major in? Of course your friends and your teachers and your parents are talking to you about things like business and chemical engineering and architecture. Do these all sound boring? Are you looking for something with a little more zest?

  • Humber College, in Toronto, offers a college degree in Comedy Writing. If you really enjoy making other people laugh and would like to spend the next four years of your life learning how to do that flawlessly, this could be the college for you. Here you’ll take classes like “Improvisation” and “Advanced Stand-up Comedy”. Graduates have gone to work for channels like Comedy Central.
  • If you’d rather learn about comedy than how to create it, try getting a degree in Popular Culture from Bowling Green State University. Students of this major often go on to find jobs in advertising or public relations, so you can promise your parents you’ll be able to find work after this! This program comes with access to the Browne Popular Culture Library and The Music Library and Sound Recordings Archives, which contains over 650,000 compact discs of recordings. Some classes offered in this major are “Introduction to Popular Culture,” “Introduction to Folklore and Folklife”, and “Youth in Popular Culture”.
  • Are you interested in building things, but not sure that traditional engineering is the right fit? The University of Nevada, Las Vegas offers a major in Entertainment Engineering and Design. That is to say, you will be majoring in how to build casino games, in a city that was built on casinos. This major considers many topics, from animatronics to design.
  • If casinos aren’t quite your game, you can try for a degree in Bowling Industry Management and Technology from Vincennes University. This is more of a business degree, with classes teaching accounting and sales and marketing on top of bowling specific topics. The good news is, the school has its own 18 lane bowling alley for “laboratory work”!
  • Did you spend your childhood locked in your room playing Roller Coaster Tycoon? California State University Long Beach might offer just the opportunity for you, with their degree in Theme Park Engineering. Here you will learn all about the physics required to make roller coasters and other amazing rides actually work. Even if theme parks aren’t a particular passion of yours, getting to go to college in Long Beach is a huge plus!

There are plenty of majors out there, so if you haven’t decided just what you want to do with your life, don’t despair. Research may take a lot of time, but it can save you a lot in the future by helping you clearly determining how you want to spend your career.
