Learning How To Learn

Recently, one of my friends said to me, “I think as a senior in college I finally figured out how to study”. His statement really got me thinking. It’s often easy to assume that each of us knows how to study, sometimes, we just don’t see the results we may want, but it has nothing to do with the way we study, right? Well, that may be a wrong assumption.

There are so many different ways to study, and each person has a unique method that works for them. It’s easy to spend hours and hours reading over notes, or days re-writing lectures, but is this really making an impact on your brain’s learning? It’s so important to find the way that works best by trying out different study habits, but the most important thing that students forget is, quality over quantity. There is no reason to spend all night studying if the studying is inefficient and unproductive.

A standardized exam like the SAT or ACT requires a lot of studying, a lot of productive studying. Some students prefer to constantly take practice exams, other like to make flash cards, and others like to talk through the problems. It’s easy to put in 100 hours of studying and not see an improvement in the score because that particular study method wasn’t aligned with the way a student learns.

For this reason, at Victory Step, we do everything we can to ensure that every hour, minute, and second, that a student is putting into studying for the exam will lead to positive results. Each of our staff members and instructors wants to make sure that each student is offered every resource possible to improve his or her score. We offer various options from classroom learning, to online classes, to private tutoring. Our instructors, even in a classroom studying, make sure that each student is receiving individual time and attention. We don’t want our students to say, “I spent hundreds of hours studying.” We want them to say, “my score went up by hundreds of points”! Whether it’s with Victory Step, on his/her own, or even with another company, we want each student to succeed in his or her studies, and the first step to that success is analyzing and figuring out the best study method!
